Athens Wins National Water Conservation Award

Athens has been named the most Water Wise city in its category in the Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation. Annual mayor's challenge. Laurie Lofton, Program Specialist ACC's Water Conservation Office says those taking part went to www.mywaterpledge.com to make their conservation commitment.

"You were given a list of options of way you would become more water efficient, and you would select which one you were willing to do," Lofton said. "We had over 8,000 pledges here in Athens, to cut water use by 42.3 million gallons."

Athens Area Under Hazardous Weather Outlook

A hazardous weather outlook is in effect for several north and central  Georgia counties, including: Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe. A flash flood watch is in effect beginning Monday tonight through Wednesday afternoon.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to begin increasing in coverage Monday afternoon and into the overnight hours Monday tonight. Heavy rainfall, up to one to two inches per hour and frequent lightning will be the primary hazards. A break in the storms is expected Tuesday afternoon before additional storms develop.

Man gets 10-year sentence for shooting Georgia officer

A man who shot a Georgia police officer after luring him into an ambush with a 911 call has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is holding a press conference Tuesday, May 23 at City Hall. President Mokah-Jasmine Johnson says the event is taking place to discuss a recent complaint of discrimination filed against a downtown Athens bar under the city's amended alcohol ordinance. The measure was passed by Clarke County commissioners last year. Local civil rights attorney Ken Dious has teamed up of Ryan M. Heron, a local attorney and advocate, to officially submit a complaint form to the Athens-Clarke County Attorney's office on behalf of Kendrick Bullock.

The latest in a series of event celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation gets underway Monday  evening.

The historic Morton Theatre in downtown Athens is the setting for the 48th Annual Preservation Awards. The event recognizes local preservation efforts from the previous year. Committee Chair Jennifer Lewis says the event celebrates those doing real work when it comes to saving, rehabilitating and renewing historic buildings.

"This is the best make-over show you will ever see," Lewis said. "It is wonderful."
