UGA President Jere Morehead holding his regularly scheduled cabinet meeting and media briefing this morning. Among the topics discussed, the $5.7 billion economic impact UGA has on the state, 96% career outcomes rate for UGA grads, and the 210 need-based scholarships awarded during the fiscal year. The president also addressed the need for a $35 million STEM research building proposed by Governor Deal.
"We're hiring all these great researchers that are bringing grants to the University of Georgia," said Morehead. "And they need a place to do their research. We have the obligation when we get these federal grants to provide adequate space for the research to get underway. And we're out of research space."
The university has increased research spending to $458 million. Provost Pamela Whitten spoke about the importance of the work being done.
"There are multiple ways that you look at research output and productivity. Certainly one marker is a look at funds that are coming into the university to support that research. We honed in and we came out with three strategic research signatures: inquiring and innovating into human health, safeguarding and sustaining our world and advancing the land grant mission," said Whitten.
UGA has increased research spending by 31% over the past four years.
