Members of the community are invited to the Athens-Clarke Heritage Foundation’s September 2017 Brown Bag Lunch. They’ll learn about the history of confederate monuments in Athens and throughout the nation.
In the wake of the national discussion regarding confederate symbols, the Lyndon House is hosting ‘Confederate Monuments-Context and Controversy.’ University of Georgia Professor Dr. Kela Reason will discuss the history and construction of the monuments and memorials. She will provide context during the informal dialogue.
“There’s been a lot of polarizing discussion about these monuments and I think that each of them need to be taken on their own terms,” according to Reason. “What I’d like to do is to give people information about the history of these monuments, when they went up, how they were erected, who paid for them and also to tell them about some of the options that people are considering right now.”
Attendees are invited to bring their lunch, sit in on the discussion, and participate in a question and answer session afterward.
Reservations are not required for the free event which is from 12 to 1 pm Wednesday at the Lyndon House.
