Latest Flu Numbers in Georgia at 51 Deaths; Peak Still to Come

NPR

The number of flu-related deaths in Georgia has risen to 51.

On Friday, Georgia Department of Public Health officials announced that the number of flu deaths in the state has again increased, now up to 51. Officials had said just two days before on Wednesday that the number was up to 37. The week before, the number of deaths was at 25.

The majority of the deaths were in people over the age of 65, though at least two pediatric deaths have been reported in Georgia.

A spokesperson for the CDC said at a Friday press conference that flu deaths have not yet hit their peak, and there may be several weeks to go.

The national rate of hospitalizations due to the flu is at its highest since the CDC has started tracking the data in 2010.

Officials are still recommending that if you have not received a flu shot, to get one. However,  make sure to call ahead because many pharmacies have reported running out of the vaccine.
