Georgia's Jobless Rate Lowest in Nearly 10 Years

Georgia’s unemployment rate is the lowest it’s been in nearly 10 years. State labor officials say June’s unemployment rate dropped to 4.8 percent, the lowest level since September 2007. The Georgia Department of labor announced the numbers today. It’s the fifth month in a row that the state’s jobless rate has declined.

State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler says employers continue to create jobs.

“We more than doubled the amount of jobs we have been averaging during the June time period, but even better news is we saw a fair amount of those jobs get filled as we saw about 8,000 people actually become employed during the month,” Butler said. “So overall we’ve seen some very good numbers for the month of June."

Butler says the state is posting record numbers.

“We’ve been on kind of a roll ever since the end of last year, and that roll is we have been setting records, not only in the number of jobs that are of there in the state of Georgia, but also the number of people employed and the number of people in our workforce, which are all the three things that you want to see increase. “

He adds the state is faring better than the nation as a whole.

“Georgia has been doing a much better job of that, quite frankly, than most of the rest of the nation. We have been in the top five in those categories when we talk about increases over the last several months.”

In June 2016, the rate was 5.3 percent.
