With more teens get their driver’s licenses during the summer more than any other season and an average of six teens die every day from motor vehicle injuries, the personal finance website WalletHub released its report on 2018’s Best and Worst States for Teen Drivers.
Georgia came in in the top 20, at number 16 on that list. Jill Gonzalez says WalletHub analysts compared the 50 states in three main categories: safety, economic environment, and driving laws…an area where Georgia did particularly well.
“And that’s really because it has some of the best driving laws for teen drivers in the country,” according to Gonzalez. “It has four of the optimal six graduated driver licensing program laws. That’s everything from minimum ages, to a holding period, to restrictions on when to drive and how many people can be in the car.”
Of course there’s always room for improvement.
“The only place where I think Georgia could do a little better is the economic environment, particularly the premium increase after adding a teen driver to a parent’s insurance policy. You can probably expect your policy to go up around 80 percent after that.”
Gonzalez says premiums usually jump anywhere from 50 to over 100 percent once a teen is added to insurance.
New York was ranked the best state for teen drivers while Wyoming was number 50 on the list.
