Books for Keeps Book Give-away

19 April 2017

Athens' nationally-recognized nonprofit Books for Keeps could use some helping hands in the coming weeks. The organization is preparing to give out thousands of books over the course of one month.

The agency kicks things off Monday, April 24th. Hundreds of volunteers are needed for two to four hour shifts. Leslie Hale is Executive Director of the nonprofit.

“And we will be in 15 different schools across Georgia, with the majority of them right here in Athens, giving away books between late April and the first three weeks of May,” Hale said. “And in every single school that we serve, every child in grades K-5 picks out 12 books to take home and keep forever, no questions asked.”

She says the organization’s goal is simple.

‘We just want kids reading over summer to keep up all that hard work that they’ve done during the school year with fun books.”

Hale says they are giving away 72-thousand books.

“What we are trying to do is make sure that children regardless of their income level, have access to the same things that their peers do which is fun books to keep them stimulated, but also to help them connect with their education, connect with reading as a fun activity.’

The organization’s book give-away starts next week and runs through the third week of May. To volunteer or donate, visit booksforkeeps.org.
