UGA Professor Comments on Supreme Court Decision Against Aereo

26 June 2014

Internet start-up Aereo describes the U-S Supreme Court’s 6-3 decision against the company on Wednesday as a massive setback for the American consumer.”

Aereo rents dime sized antennas to subscribers so they can watch local TV stations without having to erect their own antenna.
University of Georgia Journalism Professor Kent Middleton, an expert in media law, says it’s over for Aereo but by no means is it bad news for so-called “cord cutters,” who can continue to watch TV programs and movies without a cable or satellite subscription.”

“Even with this decision, I think we’ll see more networks providing streams… more perhaps direct communication to consumers,” said Professor Kent Middleton.

Three Supreme Court justices disagreed with with the majority opinion.
