Madison County Selecting Firm to Move Forward with Jail Expansion

03 March 2014

ATHENS - Madison County is in the process of selecting firms to design and construct an expansion of the local jail.

Officials expect the groundbreaking for the addition to the Madison County Jail to take place in early summer.

The jail is currently at capacity, and the expansion would create a sufficient amount of rooms.

The companies interested in making bids for the design and construction are waiting for officials to give them specifications on what is expected in the addition, which should be no later than the end of March.

A contract should be awarded sometime in April.

The expansion is funded through the 2008 SPLOST, which proposed $3.1 million through the special tax to expand the jail.
