College Enrollment Decline
Enrollment in Georgia's universities and colleges declined over the past two years.
The decline is especially steep at Georgia’s technical colleges which just 3 years ago was in the middle of a large jump in enrollment. In 2009 enrollment in the state’s technical colleges was 81,000, and rose to 107,000 by 2011. By 2013, however, enrollment fell to 79,000, a 26 percent drop. The number of graduates has also dropped dramatically in the same time. After peaking at over 35,000 in 2011, graduates fell to just over 28,000. The university system has not seen the same decline, but growth has slowed down.
Gov. Nathan deal set a goal to add 250,000 college and technical school graduates by 2020 to create a more educated state workforce. Officials say that despite the declines the state is still on track to meet that goal.
