Tornado Watch Issued for Athens Area

A tornado watch has been issued for most of north Georgia. Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oglethorpe, and Oconee counties are included in th e 49 Georgia counties under that watch until 6 o' clock this evening.

Showers and thunderstorms will increase across north and central
Georgia this morning and continue through the afternoon. Some
storms could be strong to severe, capable of damaging winds, large
hail.

Roll Out the Barrels Silent Auction

Terrapin Beer Company is hosting a benefit for the Green School Program, Thursday May 25th.
Roll Out the Barrels 2017  features twenty-one  rain barrels painted by local artists. They will be available during a silent auction. Laurie Lofton, Program Specialist with the ACC Water Conservation Office, says all proceeds go to the Athens Green School Program.

Red Cross Seeking Blood Donations

The Red Cross is urging eligible donors to give blood from May 26 through June 15. Communications Manager Kristen Stancil says supplies often decrease during this time of year.

"The Red Cross does see donations decline during the summer months," Stancil said. "People usually just get very busy with travel and their summer schedule and a lot of times just aren't available to give blood, however there's a constant need for blood donations. So before you get busy we do ask people to go ahead and find a donation location so that they can help save lives."

Athens Student Loan Debt

Athens tops many of the "best-of" lists when it comes to college grads, but there's at least one area that needs improvement according to some experts.

Athens is among the worst cities in the nation when it comes to debt-to-income ratio, according to the personal finance website WalletHub.  Analysts considered median student debt, and the earnings of Bachelors degree holders in addition to the debt-to-income ratio.  Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Athens is typical of many college towns.

Athens Wins National Water Conservation Award

Athens has been named the most Water Wise city in its category in the Wyland National Mayor's Challenge for Water Conservation. Annual mayor's challenge. Laurie Lofton, Program Specialist ACC's Water Conservation Office says those taking part went to www.mywaterpledge.com to make their conservation commitment.

"You were given a list of options of way you would become more water efficient, and you would select which one you were willing to do," Lofton said. "We had over 8,000 pledges here in Athens, to cut water use by 42.3 million gallons."
