Following a spike in deadly attacks on police, more than a dozen states have responded this year with "Blue Lives Matter" laws that come down even harder on crimes against law enforcement officers, raising concern among some civil rights activists of a potential setback in police-community relations.

The Shepherd's Men, a 17-member team of active and former servicemen and civilians are taking part in their 4th annual run in eight cities through Memorial Day. The group will be in Athens Sunday, May 28. They'll gather on the steps of the University of Georgia Chapel at 10 am before starting their half marathon at 10:30.

The Georgia Department of Public Safety is reminding drivers to use extra caution this Memorial Day weekend. The state DOT predicts 18 traffic deaths, 2,401 traffic crashes and 1,012 injuries during the 78-hour holiday period that begins Friday, May 26 at 6 p.m. and ends at midnight Memorial Day.

GBI Warns of Counterfeit Pills

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is issuing a public safety alert regarding counterfeit pills.
According to a media release from the agency, since January 2015, the GBI crime lab has received 454 exhibits of counterfeit pills, or pills which contain drugs other than those indicated by the markings. In what they call an alarming discovery, authorities found pills marked oxycodone actually contained fentanyl, furanly fentanyl, and U-47700 (pink). The Atlanta area had the highest number of incidents, but there were cases Clarke County as well.
