The results are in the Athens-Clarke county mayor’s race and there will be no runoff. With 100% of the vote in, Commissioner Kelly Girtz won with just over 60% of the vote.

He spoke with WUGA at his victory celebration Tuesday night.

It feels fantastic to have gotten such overwhelming support from people in this town that I love so much,” Girtz said. “We were on message, we were positive, we were forward-focused, we were honest, we were warm, we were engaging and collectively, all those things yielded success.”

Cedar Shoals High School Hosts Mayoral Candidate Forum

Athens voters head to the polls next week and there are still some who haven’t made their final decisions on the candidates for mayor.  Several dozen voters attended a mayoral candidate forum Monday evening at Cedar Shoals high school.

Topics discussed included affordable housing, transportation, immigrants in the community, the airport, and others.

Retirees Jack Curry and David Ranking say they want more information before making a decision.

“We live on the Eastside so we’d like to see someone to promote the Eastside,” Curry said.

Athens mayoral candidate Richie Knight has unveiled a 21-point strategy he says will make Athens more prosperous. Knight’s plan contains initiatives in categories including economic development, workforce development, housing, public safety, youth development, and accountability and transparency. They involve consolidation of offices, summer employment programs, and a property tax freeze for qualifying seniors among other items.

Full House for WUGA's Mayoral Debate at Athens Library

WUGA held a mayoral debate at the Athens Regional Library Tuesday night.

Candidates Richie Knight, Harry Sims, and Kelly Girtz took part in the event which featured questions submitted by WUGA listeners as well as those from a panel of local journalists. William Breeding is a retired educator who attended the debate.

“Well, I think we have three good candidates and regardless of who wins I think we’ll be in pretty good hands from the answers they gave tonight,” according to Breeding.  

Mayoral Candidate Unveils Business Plan for Athens

Athens mayoral candidate Kelly Girtz has unveiled a five-point business plan for the Classic City. Girtz plans to Create a “one-stop shop” for business permitting, use tax allocation districts to support creation of new development areas, provide funding to expand capacities of existing tech incubator and small business branding efforts, develop an economic strategy to emphasize core strengths and fund efforts to map and improve land available for business development.
