What is underwriting?

Underwriting is on-air credit that businesses and organizations receive for providing funds to defray the cost of news, public affairs, and music programs featured on WUGA. Underwriting combines the benefits of advertising with sound public relations. Public radio sponsorship announcements build awareness and credibility. Underwriters are also acknowledged in WUGA's monthly program guide and on this website.

Program underwriting can benefit your company ...

  • Underwriting positively affects WUGA listeners' opinions of your organization, influencing their decision to purchase your products and services. WUGA has over 25,000 listeners and covers a forty-mile radius.
  • Underwriters often report that WUGA listeners thank them for their support of public radio. This is a testimony to the loyalty of public radio listeners.
  • Underwriting builds good will, and community awareness, with listeners who are active, affluent and educated.
  • Your message is concise -- and broadcast in an environment free from commercial clutter -- increasing its impact. It makes a positive and lasting impression on thousands of listeners.
  • You associate yourself with radio programming intended to educate and enrich the public.
  • You help ensure WUGA's future as a viable radio alternative.

Who Listens To Public Radio?

  • 35% live in households with annual incomes of $75,000 or more
  • 73% own their own home
  • 45% are professionals, managers, or administrators
  • Public radio listeners are twice as likely as the average American to make business decisions that determine need, specify brands and vendors, and authorize purchases

Thanks to our Underwriters

WUGA introduces dozens of Athens area businesses to its listening audience each day. Underwriters offer diverse services ranging from banking to chess lessons, juice squeezing to window washing. These underwriters have found public radio to be most effective in presenting listeners with a constant reminder of their services.

WUGA bids farewell to one of our original underwriters, Farm Electric, which is closing after 52 years of business.

For underwriting information, call Abbie Thaxton at 542-9842 or Lois Player at
548-5137. We look forward to welcoming you to our family of underwriters.
