UGA's Karen Tinsley Remembered at Memorial Service as Affordable Housing Advocate, Active Athlete

UGA professor Karen Tinsley’s memorial service was held Monday afternoon in the UGA Chapel.

Karen Tinsley, a professor in the UGA College of Family and Consumer Sciences and avid cyclist in the community, died last week after a truck hit her bike from behind in Oconee County.

Deborah Dietzler, a close friend of Tinsley’s, spoke at the memorial service, and told stories of their strong friendship, much of which they spent together on active pursuits, including playing tennis, running and going to spin classes. She wants Tinsley to be remembered for her strong bonds both on campus and in the community.

“Well I think on a personal level, I think Karen’s example should inspire all of us to be the very best friends that we can be,” said Dietzler.

Other speakers at the memorial service included Tinsley's academic mentor Dr. Tom Rodgers, her dissertation chair, Ron Warren, long-time cycling friend, Alan Bowden, academic co-teacher, Kim Skobba, and sister, Susan Schumer.

"To hear your stories about our daughter has given us comfort," said Tinsley's mother, Judy Tinsley McPeak, who also spoke during the service.

Tinsley is also survived by her father Roger Tinsley, six siblings, and her partner, recently retired UGA professor Art Snow.

Tinsley received both her master’s and doctoral degrees in economics from UGA, and had worked at the university for 16 years. One of her passions was working to create affordable housing in Georgia communities.

“This is a tremendous loss to the institution and also to the state of Georgia because of her exceptional work in the area of affordable housing. Which is something that honestly, not a lot of people go into that field. And yet, she was incredibly devoted to it. There are a lot of voids that are left with her passing,” said Dietzler.

Tinsley’s family has set up "The Karen Tinsley Fund," in her honor for undergraduate students who are pursuing a career in affordable housing. Those interested in donating can make checks payable to the UGA Foundation, putting, "Karen Tinsley Fund" in the memo line.

Charges against the driver of the truck who hit Tinsley are still pending.
