UGA Announces Next Steps Regarding Baldwin Hall Site Research

Richard Hamm/Athens Banner-Herald

The University of Georgia has announced the next steps for research about the Baldwin Hall site.
UGA will sponsor additional research to learn more about the lives of the individuals whose gravesites were discovered during the construction of the Baldwin Hall expansion.

The work is broken down into two areas, further DNA analysis of the remains and a historical mapping study to learn more about the physical environment in which they lived and worked.  The remains were discovered in November 2015, and the university contacted the State Archeologist's Office for guidance. Only about a third of the remains from the 105 gravesites were able to be tested for DNA. The vast majority of those were of maternal African descent.
Researchers at the University of Texas will conduct further DNA testing to provide a detailed analysis within the coming year.
The information will help determine if any living community members are related to those individuals.
