Potential for Severe Weather in Athens/Surrounding Area

Forecasters say the risk of severe weather is increasing around much of the south. More than 29 million people face a threat of severe storms Monday that could bring hail the size of tennis balls, damaging winds and strong tornadoes to the southeastern United States.

Athens-Clarke, Barrow, Jackson, Madison, Oconee, and Oglethorpe counties are under a hazardous weather outlook. The risk of severe thunderstorms, including tornadoes will increase across much of north and central Georgia through Monday evening. Forecasters with the National Weather Service say a line of thunderstorms could bring tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds in excess of 70 miles per hour to the area, along with heavy rain and frequent lightning. The potential for severe weather is expected to be highest between 5 pm and 2 am Tuesday morning.
