New Residential Condo Building Approved by ACC Commission for Development

Downtown Athens

A high-rise building has been approved for development in downtown Athens.

This week, Athens-Clarke County Commissioners approved by a vote of 7-3 to allow a high-rise condo building to be built in downtown. The building is going to be designated as a home for retirees and will be located at 155 Mitchell Street, right behind Nuci’s Space.

Flagpole reports that the condo will be seven stories on one side and ten stories on the other side It will also have 256 bedrooms.

Athens residents attended the County Commission meeting and others emailed in comments to protest the new building. But the commissioners approved the development with a majority vote.

Right now the Athens downtown area is under a building moratorium while an outside consultant studies health and safety related to overcrowding and the bar scene. The moratorium was passed this February and will last for a year.

The new high-rise is planned to start construction in April 2018.
