Jackson EMC Workers Headed to Puerto Rico to Help with Hurricane Recovery

Jackson EMC

As storm-ravaged Puerto Rico continues to recover from Hurricane Maria, Jackson EMC is sending a crew to help in the restoration efforts.

April Sorrow is the Director of Public Relations and Communication for the company. She says the five-man crew of contractors usually works in the Neese District in Madison County.

"We have released one of our pipe crews to go and help out the power restoration effort in Puerto Rico for the next month. Right now Puerto Rico still has 60 percent of the island, island's residents remain without power still today. So we are happy to send this crew whenever we can to help with that restoration," said Sorrow.

Sorrow says that group of workers is well-suited for the circumstances facing them on the island and they will be particularly effective in tackling the daunting task.

"Most of the contractors that work with Jackson EMC work on installing new line or any upgrades that we have planned," said Sorrow. "So this crew is very used to building an infrastructure so I think they will be incredibly helpful in the restoration effort in Puerto Rico."

Maria made a direct hit on Puerto Rico in September, destroying much of the local power generation, transmission, and distribution systems.

Jackson EMC is the largest electric cooperative in Georgia and is headquartered in Jefferson, Georgia.
