Georgia Ranks Near Bottom on 2017 List of Most and Least Independent States

GPB

Georgia is one of the least independent states according to analysts with the personal finance website WalletHub. They compared the 50 states based on five sources of dependency: consumer finances, the government, the job market, international trade, and personal vices. Jill Gonzalez tells us where the Peach State struggled,

“Georgia ranks in the bottom ten of independent states within the U.S., right at number 41 out of all 50 states,” according to Gonzalez. “So we looked at independence on the individual level, but also really as a state, we looked at government dependency as well as international trade dependency.

Gonzalez says the state came in near bottom in a few areas.

"Georgia unfortunately ranked in the bottom ten for vice dependency, like binge drinking, smoking, etcetera, close to the bottom ten for government, as well as financial dependency.”

Georgia did have some bright spots.

"The one area where Georgia really in the last few years has been doing so well, really booming, is its job market."

She says that’s due to several reasons.

"The industry has really grown as far as variety levels, we’re seeing high job growth rates around the 5 percent level year over year, which is a huge number. Typically that number is more like one or two percent. We’re seeing lower un and under employment rates.”

Colorado was the most independent state while Louisiana came in dead last at most dependent.
