Georgia ranks near the bottom of the list of 2017’s best and Worst States to have a baby. The personal finance website WalletHub studied all 50 states and the District of Columbia to determine the most ideal places to have a baby. Analysts studied 20 key measures of cost, accessibility, and baby-friendliness. They included the costs of having a hospital birth for both conventional and C-sections deliveries, annual average infant care costs, and pediatricians per capital. Jill Gonzalez says the Peach State came in at number 44.
“Georgia did poorly when it comes to its infant mortality rate, it’s one of the highest in the country right now, twice as high as the other states near the top of the list like New Hampshire, Massachusetts, California,” according to Gonzalez. “So that’s one area where Georgia obviously can really step it up, and it also has a pretty high rate of low birth weight and pre-term births.”
Vermont was the best state, Mississippi the worst. Georgia scored highest at number 8 when it comes to costs; and number 16 on the list for the number of Midwives and OB-GYNs per Capita. The study did not measure the best places to actually raise a child.
