Experts say a third of all annual giving takes place in December. This is a time of giving for many Americans and some states are more charitable than others.
Analyst Jill Gonzalez with the personal-finance website WalletHub said Georgia ranked high compared to the rest of the nation.
"All in all, Georgia ranks ninth best, a top ten charitable state," said Gonzalez. "And it did really well when it comes to its volunteering and service ranking. It also got really high marks when it comes to its giving ratio. And it also was in top ten when it comes to the percent of the population that either collects, makes or distributes clothing for charitable purposes"
Gonzalez says analysts covered a variety of factors in determining the list.
"Some of the fourteen factors here were things like volunteer rates. Also the number of hours volunteering per capita. We looked at the percentage of income donated to charity. As well as the number of public charities, food banks, and shelters for the homeless," said Gonzalez.
While the Peach State was among the most generous, there were of course, some grinches on the list.
"Some of the states that could be a little bit more charitable throughout the year," said Gonzalez. "The bottom five here were Arizona, then Louisiana, Nevada, Rhode Island, and Hawaii coming in at fiftieth."
Blue and red states were equally generous.
Americans gave more than $389 billion last year, placing us number five on the World Giving Index.
