Free Screening of "Carving Up Oconee" Documentary

The Oconee County Democrats and the Oconee Progressives are hosting an event, “Carving Up Oconee Revisited: - A Public Perspective.” Members of the community are invited to attend a free screening of the Documentary “Carving Up Oconee,” The film will be followed by a panel discussion of the current need for continued land-use protection of the rural southern part of the county.

Filmmaker Celestea Sharp is one of the panelists for the event.

“This is free to the public and we’re hoping it will spark discussion because we feel like this is a very good time for my film to be shown again,” Sharp said.” It was actually filmed over four years, 2004 to 2008.; which was just before the housing boom burst. I made it during those years because things were going crazy during Oconee County.”

Organizers say the topic may also be of interest to residents in surrounding communities due to the eastward expansion of Atlanta’s commuters.

“Development is picking up very rapidly in Oconee County, you really have to be vigilant because when there’s money to be made things are going to happen unless the citizens and the residents of the area band together to help shape the future of their community, because there’s nobody looking out for their interests.”

That screening and panel discussion is Sunday, March 25th at the Watkinsville Library.
