Flu Deaths in Georgia Have Doubled from Last Week

NPR

Flu activity continues to be widespread across the state.

The number of flu-related deaths in Georgia has more than doubled according to the State Department of Public Health. 25 people have now died from the flu in Georgia. Last week the number of deaths was at 12.

Metro Atlanta had 115 flu-related hospitalizations during the third week of January. That was up from 40 hospitalizations during the second week of the month.

Georgia is joining the rest of the nation in being hit hard by this year’s predominant strain of the flu, H3N2. This strain is known to be particularly hard on the elderly, children, and those who already have existing health conditions.

The Georgia Department of Public Health is urging anyone who has not received a flu shot to do so. They recommend that every individual over six months of age should get the flu vaccine.

Other tips for avoiding the flu include washing hands frequently and avoid touching your face.
