Athens Student Loan Debt

ACC Government

Athens tops many of the "best-of" lists when it comes to college grads, but there's at least one area that needs improvement according to some experts.

Athens is among the worst cities in the nation when it comes to debt-to-income ratio, according to the personal finance website WalletHub.  Analysts considered median student debt, and the earnings of Bachelors degree holders in addition to the debt-to-income ratio.  Analyst Jill Gonzalez says Athens is typical of many college towns.

"Athens is part of this 99th percentile which would be where the most student debt is right now," according to Gonzalez. "Median student debt in Athens is around $22,500 and earnings of Bachelors degree holders there is just under $31,000 so that's a ratio of about 73%."

College Park also made the list, but Gonzalez says they fared a bit better than Athens because their starting salaries are about ten thousand dollars more.
The city with the worst student debt was Ypslilanti, Michigan.
