The first of two ceremonies recognizing the Athens Regional Library System takes place this weekend.
The Athens library was named the Georgia Public Library of the Year for 2017 by the Georgia Public Library Service. This is the first time a multi-branch library system has won the award. The Athens system has 11 branches in five counties, Clarke, Franklin, Madison, Oconee and Oglethorpe.
Rhiannon Eades is the Public Information Officer.
"We're elated. It's just a really great thing to be recognized for the work that we do. Every person on staff at every branch are so dedicated to helping people every day. So it's really great to be recognized for that," said Eades.
The library staff will receive the award at 3 o’ clock this Sunday. A reception will follow and the community is invited.
That ceremony will be held at the Baxter Street location. A second ceremony will take place at the Capitol on January 30th.
