The Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement is inviting the community to a gathering in the wake of Charlottesville. “A Response from Athens, Ga. A Community Conversation and Public Reading.” The event will be held inside the ACC Library auditorium on Baxter Street. It is being presented by Athens Anti-Discrimination Movement. The conversation will be led by AADM founders Mokah and Knowa Johnson.
Milton Leathers will conduct a public reading. Leathers is the grandson of Andrew Cobb Erwin, former mayor of Athens from 1918-1921.
Leathers will recite his grandfather's anti-KKK speech from the 1924 Democratic Party National Convention held at Madison Square Garden in NYC, during the height of the political convention historically known as the Klanbake. After the speech, the floor will open up for conversation about Charlottesville and parallel issues here in Athens Clarke County and Northeast Georgia. The event takes place Wednesday, August 16th at 6 pm.
