ACCPD: 2017 Crime Numbers are Some of the Lowest Since Unification

The crime numbers for 2017 are in for the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, and they are some of the lowest the department has seen since unification.

The total number of arrest was down from over 4100 in 2016 to just over 3500 in 2017. Part 1 crimes, which include murder, robbery, aggravated assault, and larceny are down.

Public Information Officer Epifanio Rodriguez says the number burglaries was down significantly in 2017.

"We're very proud of the stats," said Rodriguez. "Once we compiled all of the stats at the end of the year, we started looking at them, we realized that the stats we have now are some of the lowest that we've seen since unification. Specifically looking at our burglary stats which are down nearly 200 from last year. It all goes back to the hard work of the men and women who wear the uniform to go out every day. They have the dedication to go out there and make sure to keep Athens-Clarke County safe."

Robberies decreased from 2016, as did larceny. Three additional rapes were reported, but the number was lower than in 2015, The number of aggravated assaults and vehicle thefts increased slightly.

There were also lower reported incidents involving use of force.

The most recent numbers are for 2015, 2016, and last year.

Rodriguez did say that the department is looking to hire additional officers. Those interested in applying can visit www.athensclarekcounty.com for either the police department or human resources.
