The 19th Season of "The Vagina Monologues" Starts in Athens on Thursday Night

Mumbi Mwaura

This year marks the 19th annual production of "The Vagina Monologues" in Athens.

Eve Ensler’s classic play of female empowerment, "The Vagina Monologues," has always been put on around Valentine’s Day. In Athens, it’s also always been produced by Project Safe, a local non-profit that works to end domestic violence in the community.

Mary Katherine Hawks, one of the actresses in the play, and a local social worker, said she believes the "Vagina Monologues" are important for the Athens community to see.

“This play is a great way to raise awareness of women's issues, but also help heal and nurture the women in the play. And help build a community that is not afraid to talk about the tough things,” said Hawks.

Though the production always features local women doing the monologues, this year there will also be several prominent community members and activists speaking. Mumbi Mwaura, is the co-director of the play.

“We have Representative Deborah Gonzalez. We have Jasmine Mokah Johnson. We have Celest Ngeve coming. And then like a host of other people, we have the Dean of the School of Social Work will be there. And so we have about between two to three people per night,” said Mwaura.

"The Vagina Monologues" will be in the UGA Chapel starting at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, and 3 p.m. on Sunday. You can visit Project Safe’s website for times and to buy tickets.

All proceeds from the production will go to Project Safe.
