Speaker Ralston Wants Complaint Dropped
House Speaker David Ralston is asking to have a complaint filed against him by the State Bar of Georgia dismissed. Ralston denies that he violated rules related to his work as an attorney.
The State Bar of Georgia in June filed a petition in the state Supreme Court asking for a special master to investigate Ralston over accusations he allowed a case to languish while serving in the Legislature and advanced his client money to pay personal expenses. The petition says Ralston paid the man with his own money and money belonging to other clients.
Potential penalties range from public reprimand to disbarment.
In an email to his fellow GOP lawmakers, Ralston says he'll be "vigorously defending" his professional reputation and his actions were "open, honest and sincere" in representing his client.
