Join the WUGA 1987 Club
WUGA, the University of Georgia’s award-winning NPR-affiliated radio station is celebrating a big birthday in 2017 — and it’s turning to the community to support the expansion of local news, public affairs, music and cultural programming to better serve listeners across Northeast Georgia.
The station, which celebrates its 30th anniversary in 2017, welcomes contributions of any amount, but hopes many listeners will contribute $19.87 each month, commemorating the year WUGA began broadcasting in Athens.
The fund-drive is headed by Randall Abney, BBA ’68, chair of the marketing-finance committee of the 15 member WUGA Community Advisory Council. “Now, more than ever,” Abney said, “Athenians depend on public radio for fair and accurate news as tweets and fake news sites multiply and newspapers cut their staffs. We hope Athenians who love public radio as I do will sustain WUGA by joining the 1987 Club, pledging $19.87 per month.” WUGA transformed radio news and cultural affairs programming in Athens. The number one goal is to broaden and deepen local news coverage as listeners requested in a recent survey. The WUGA fund-drive is part of UGA’s $1.2 billion “Commit to Georgia” campaign. Contributors of $1,000 or more become members of the UGA Presidents Club.
WUGA most effectively shares the University with the community when it provides authoritative, independent news and public affairs programs as well as original broadcasts in music and the arts. WUGA continues to expand program-development relationships with units on the UGA campus, including Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communication, Hodgson School of Music and others. The partnership with Grady College is yielding weekly student-managed health and science news programs, the WUGA Health Desk and WUGA has begun a new series of programs featuring music performed by UGA faculty, students and staff. Contributions to the 1987 Club will allow WUGA to create more programs with UGA units which can enhance the quality of life in the community.
WUGA, an NPR affiliate, is operated by the University of Georgia through a partnership with Georgia Public Broadcasting.
